Karkade (Hibiscus Tea)

Hibiscus, or Karkade, as it is known in Egypt, combines tart and sweet herbal teas made with dried hibiscus flowers. This sweet, vibrant, and antioxidant-rich drink is a great alternative to soda.

This recipe for hibiscus is Egypt's 2,000-year-old version, but with less sugar and without caffeine. This tea is sweet and tart, but not overpowering in any direction. It is perfect for a hot summer day.

Hibiscus looks and tastes like cranberry, but it is lighter and sweeter. This makes it both refreshing and beautiful, which is always a plus! In the summer, I enjoy hibiscus flavored tea as a pick-me up.

You can adjust this recipe for hibiscus to suit your taste. You can use any sweetener you want and adjust the quantity to your taste. You're just a splash away from an Egyptian style margarita, as I mention in my book. You can do whatever you like with this information.

What is Hibiscus Tea?

Hibiscus tea, also known as "hibiscus tea" or "roselle," is made by steeping dried hibiscus petals in water. There are many versions of hibiscus tea around the world. From Agua De Jamaica to Bissap.

In Egypt, we refer to hibiscus as "kar-kadeh." My family and I visited Old Cairo during a hot summer to get my first taste of this deep red elixir. The "karkade" man, yelling "Karkade! ", was seen in the narrow streets. I can still see the "karkade man" yelling "Karkade!" and handing out ice-cold drinks from a carafe that was strapped around his waist.

Let me know your thoughts on Instagram or below in the comments if you try Egypt's version hibiscus tee!

Is Hibiscus Tea Good For You?

Since ancient times, hibiscus has been valued for its many health benefits.

A meta-analysis published in the National Library of Medicine found that clinical trials showed "a significant effect of H.sabdariffa (hibiscus) in lowering both diastolic and systolic bloodpressure." It contains a good amount of minerals like potassium and magnesium.

This hibiscus recipe is perfect for those who want a healthier alternative to sodas, or simply a cool drink for a hot summer day.

Ingredients in Iced Hibiscus tea

Most of the ingredients you need to make this hibiscus herbal tea are likely already in your kitchen. You can easily find them if you don't have any. You'll need the following to get started:

  • Filtered Water:Filtered waters ensure the best taste.
  • Dried Hibiscus flowers:Sometimes labelled "Flor de Jamaica," it is easy to find dried hibiscus flower online. You can also find them in the tea aisle of your local grocery store.
  • Sweetener Hibiscus is a very tart tea that tastes earthy. You need to add a sweetener in order to soften the taste. You can use any sweetener you like. Use cane Sugar to create a classic sweet flavor for your tea or Greek Honey, my favorite honey from Greece, to give it a Mediterranean twist. Also, agave nectar works well.
  • Lime: A squeezed lime juice gives a bright, fresh taste and the lime wheels are a beautiful garnish. If you prefer, lemons can be substituted.
  • Fresh Mint Sprigs A garnish of fresh mint leaves gives this iced tea a refreshing and pretty finish.

How To Make Hibiscus Tea

It is simple to double this hibiscus recipe. You can make a large batch of hibiscus tea to last you all week if you have an adequate pitcher. You can adjust the amount of sugar to your taste and allow it to cool for a few hours. The steps are:

  • Bring 6 cups filtered water up to a rolling boil in a medium saucepan. Add 3/4 cup dried hibiscus, 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of sweetener and stir. Turn off the heat after 3 minutes of boiling on high heat. Cover the pan, and let the hibiscus steep in the liquid for 20-30 minutes.
  • Strain. Set a fine mesh strainer on top of a glass bowl or pitcher that can withstand heat. Pour the tea into the strainer. Remove the hibiscus flower and add the lime juice.
  • Taste after letting it cool. Dilute the with more water or sweetener if it is too bitter or concentrated. Don't dilute too much, particularly if you intend to serve the drink over ice.
  • Serve chilled. Transfer to the refrigerator and chill for several hours. Covered, store in the refrigerator for up to a week. Pour the iced mixture into glasses when you are ready to serve. Each glass should be garnished with a lime slice and fresh mint. Cheers!

How To Make Hot Hibiscus Tea

The hibiscus tea is delicious when served hot. Its brightness is soothing for sore throats, just like lemon ginger tea. How to make hot hibiscus for one person:

  • Boil 8 ounces of filtered water. Water that is just below boiling temperature (about 200degF) should be used to steep the hibiscus tea.
  • Steep 1 heaping teaspoon of dried hibiscus for 5 minutes. Use a tea infuser or strain the tea through a fine-mesh strainer.
  • Adjust according to taste. A squeeze of lime or lemon juice, and a spoonful of honey can be added to the taste.

What to serve with Hibiscus Tea

It's a great afternoon tea, and it can help you curb your soda cravings! I like to serve iced tea on the back porch with some savory snacks when I make it for a group.

The tartness of the tea is perfectly complemented by fried halloumi and warmed honey. Make an antipasto plate in the Italian style and let guests help themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Mediterranean breakfast?

A Mediterranean breakfast would include a combination protein, healthy oil, and carbohydrates. There are many options for eggs, including olive oil-cooked eggs with roasted vegetables or whole-grain bread, Greek yogurt or cheese with whole grain toast, quinoa porridge, with fresh fruits and nuts, and quinoa porridge. Avocado toast with tomatoes is a delicious option for breakfast. You can start your day with Mediterranean-inspired proteins like wild-caught fish, grassfed meat, organic eggs, and nuts. Use whole grains, such as quinoa and other whole grains, to reduce sugar. Choose fresh fruits for your breakfast, as well as extra virgin olive, coconut, and avocado oil.

Are Rice and Rice part of the Mediterranean diet?

Rice is both allowed and encouraged on the Mediterranean diet. This diet emphasizes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes and healthy fats like olive oil and nuts. It also allows for moderate amounts of dairy products, fish and meat. Whole-grain white rice is a great carbohydrate source, providing energy for the body. It's also rich in dietary fiber, which can improve digestion as well as provide essential nutrients for your health such iron, B vitamins and magnesium. In order to incorporate rice into your meals, you can add cooked grains to soups, stews and salads. It is possible to reduce added fat, if necessary, in order to eat rice-based meals within the guidelines of Mediterranean nutrition.

What are some of the principles that underlie the Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean diet is a lifestyle choice known for focusing on healthful and nutritious food choices and regular physical activity. This diet emphasizes fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes, as well as healthy fats like olive oil and nuts. There is also a moderate amount of dairy products, fish and meat. The Mediterranean diet encourages the consumption of red wine in moderation. The following are the main principles of the Mediterranean Diet:

  1. Eat primarily plant-based foods, including fruits and vegetables; whole-grain bread and cereals; beans (legumes), nuts, and seeds; healthy fats from olive oil and olives; small amounts of low-fat cheese; yogurt (preferably nonfat); fish (at least twice a week), small amounts of lean poultry or red meat about once per week; minimal fried foods.
  2. It is better to choose fresh ingredients than pre-packaged, processed foods whenever possible.
  3. Use herbs instead of salt to enhance your meals.
  4. Include physical activity in your daily life, such as walking after dinner or taking part in an exercise class.
  5. Enjoy sharing meals with loved ones and enjoy the shared experience of cooking together.
  6. Pay attention to the tastes, textures and smells of your food. This is mindfulness eating. This will help to identify when you feel satisfied and full.

Is the Mediterranean diet predominantly plant-based

Yes, the Mediterranean Diet has a large portion of its diet being plant-based. Plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds are staples of this ancient diet. The traceability of red meat, poultry, fish and other animal protein sources around the Mediterranean Sea has meant that they are less common in modern diets. These protein sources can be omitted for those opting for a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle within this eating style. You can also find other dairy sources, like soy yogurt or tofu, that provide additional nutrition.

Can the Mediterranean Diet be made gluten-free?

Yes, you can adapt the Mediterranean Diet to be gluten-free. Whole-grain carbohydrates like wheat and barley can be replaced by gluten-free grains like millet or quinoa. Additionally, fruits like melon and pears, fresh vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds are naturally gluten-free options that should feature heavily in this diet. Individuals with gluten intolerance to milk or dairy may benefit by choosing lactosefree products. Another option is to have porridge instead.

Is oatmeal OK on a Mediterranean diet?

Yes, oatmeal may be consumed on the Mediterranean Diet. Oats can be whole grains that provide a good source or dietary fiber and minerals, such as iron and magene. They can be served with blueberries as well as nuts, seeds and savory dishes like eggs or cheese. Oatmeal is also versatile and can help make a healthy breakfast. It could be added to smoothies, made into protein bars, or enjoyed in its basic form with almond milk and various toppings for extra nutrition such as goji berries, cinnamon, chia seeds, and peanut butter. Many countries in the Mediterranean basin are awash with oats, making them compatible with this diet.

Can I have alcohol on the Mediterranean Diet?

Yes, you can enjoy moderate alcohol consumption as part of the Mediterranean Diet. This drinking style should be limited to 1 glass daily for women and 2 for men. Dry wines, beer, and spirits with natural ingredients like brandy, vodka or whiskey are all acceptable drinks. High sugar cocktails and heavy spirits should be avoided. A daily intake of water or herbal drinks can keep your body hydrated and reduce sugar cravings.

A few tips can help make the transition to a Mediterranean lifestyle easier. Start by switching high-calorie snack foods like chips to nutrient-dense veggies. To increase your satisfaction after meals, you can incorporate grains, legumes, high-fiber foods, and other high-fiber ingredients. These steps will allow you to enjoy your food and have additional health benefits, such as a longer life expectancy and a higher quality of living.
